From its start in 2006 Adblock Plus blocked all the ads. But by 2011 we were starting to think this was a bad idea, so we asked our users if they thought so too. They did. In fact, a large majority said that they would be fine with seeing certain ads if they were not so intrusive. So, with their input, we developed standards for better ads. These became the first Acceptable Ads criteria, and as these criteria evolve users continue to be an irreplaceable part of the process.
But that doesn’t mean they have to be. Adblock Plus is endlessly and totally customizable, so users can turn off Acceptable Ads and block all ads. However, few do. After five years of running Acceptable Ads, users have demonstrated time and again that they want to play a role in the Acceptable Ads process, something the Acceptable Ads Committee will facilitate.
All our products are Acceptable Ads compatible and have similar features including opt-out and customizable whitelisting options. Advertisers and publishers who have agreed to abide by user-generated criteria are whitelisted on:
Available for Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, Maxthon, Internet Explorer and Edge
Content blocker for Safari on iOS versions 8 and higher
Mobile browser for Android OS versions 2.3 and higher
